The Genius Course Catalog allows you to enrich the entries you create for the courses and learning pathways you create for your learners. Each Course created in Genius has two description fields that show up in the Catalog: one, a Short Description field, which is shown when learners browse the catalog, and two, a Long Description field, which is shown when a learner clicks on the Info button to learn more about a course.
It is possible to use the Long Description field as well as other fields in the Course Profile to add rich-text elements and external content to a course presented through the Genius Course Catalog. This article describes how you can use this feature to enrich the Catalog entries for the courses you create in Genius.
Adding Rich Text Elements to Catalog Entries
The Long Description Field
The entries in the Long Description field are displayed to learners when they click on the More Info button of the Genius Course Catalog. When you create a course in Genius, this field can be edited through a WYSIWYG interface available under Courses > [Course Profile]. You can use this interface to enter rich text that will be displayed in the Course Catalog:
Rich-Text through Other Course Profile Fields
In addition, other fields in the Course Profiel will also allow for basic HTML formatting to provide the look you want. Keep in mind the display space will typically add a wrap.
- <b> The <b> tag will bold the text inside the tag.
- <i> The <i> tag will italicize the text inside the tag.
- <u> The <u> tag will underline the text inside the tag.
- <center> The <center> tag causes all the text within the tag to be centered
- <br> The <br> tag indicates a line break.
- <p> The <p> tag indicates a new paragraph. It is the same as <br><br>.
For example, the Location field in the section Hayden Knight sec. 1 was input as follows:
<b>This is the location</b> <br> 1425 Rivers Edge Rd. Jacksonville, Florida 32218
This field now displays as follows:
IMPORTANT NOTE: When adding special characters to fields other than the Long Description field, try to keep things simple. If you add to many line breaks or special formatting, you may cause problems with the sizing of the elements within the floating window that appears when learners click on the More Info button in their Course Catalog.
Files in the Long Description Field
The second way to enrich the catalog entries for your courses is to add files to the Genius file directory and then link to those files using Genius itself. This makes it possible for you to add syllabi, images, resume and any other information that may be important and helpful to your learners before they make a decision about whether or not to enroll in a course offered by your organization.
To attach files to the Course Catalog entry, the first step would be to upload a file using Administration > File Upload, then adding a link to the Long Description field. This field allows HTML input. To start, please go into the Administration > System Setup > File Upload menu. Choose a file using the file picker, and then click Upload. Your file should upload, and it will be saved under (for example) myOrganization.geniussis.com/upload/myTestFile.pdf
Adding Files to A Course Description
Go back to the course description of the course you want to associate with the file you just uploaded. Click Edit Information. Under the Long Description field, click on the link icon to create a link to this file, and then use the address of the file you uploaded in the previous step. Click OK, and then click Save.
Your course will now have a link to the file you just uploaded that learners can access through your Genius course catalog:
These are some ways in which you can enrich the experience of your learners and provide even more information that allows them to choose whether or not to enroll in the courses you create as part of your learning initiative. You can use these features to add links to even more items, such as driving directions, hotels, pre-reading material, or anything that you feel would help your learners get the most out of your courses.
