The Genius SIS is a highly customizable system that you can tailor to meet your needs. One of the ways in which you can tailor Genius to the specific needs of your learning initiative is through the use of the Administrative parameters used by Genius throughout the system. Think of these parameters as 'knobs' you can dial in to get Genius to look, feel and behave the way you want.
In this Article, we provide a complete Reference Guide to each Administrative parameter included with Genius 1.11. We describe what each parameter controls, the default value of each Parameter and we also recommend default values for some parameters if required. As we add articles to this Knowledge Base, we will include additional links to articles showing you how to get the most out of Genius through the use of these Parameters.
Administrative Parameters in Genius 1.11
|ACADEMIC_DIRECTOR_EMAIL||This parameter is not used in the ProEd version. In the K12 version, when you are sending an email you can “copy the academic director”. This parameter specifies what email should be used. For example, when a principal wants to be copied in emails.|
|ACTIVITY_RED||Default value = 2 days.
The threshold for the number of days of inactivity after which the activity gauge for a learner is shown in red.
|ACTIVITY_YELLOW||Default value = 1 day.
The threshold for the number of days of inactivity after which the activity gauge for a learner is shown in yellow.
Default value = 0.
When you only have one LMS connected to Genius, we will often create the user (student and instructors) immediately in the LMS when they are created in Genius, whether they are enrolled in a course or not. When you add more than one LMS, we only add the user once they are enrolled in a particular LMS the course section is being delivered on.
Note: creating an Admin account in Genius does not create an Administrator account in the LMS. Admin accounts must be created in each system using the same username for Single Sign On (SSO).
|AFFILIATION_COURSE_CAP||Default value = 9999.
This allows a client to limit the number of enrollments in a given course section for a given affiliation. For instance, a client could limit the enrollments to 2 learners per affiliation, so that one affiliation does not end up taking all seats of a course section.
|ALLOW_ADMISSION_BYPASS||Default value = 1.
Determines whether learners can be created directly in Genius (Learners tab, Add Learners option) or must go through the admissions process. When you set the parameter to “1”, it means you want Genius to allow Learners to be created without an admissions approval workflow. When you set the parameter to “0”, it means Learners must all be created through an admissions approval workflow.
|ALLOW_EDIT_OF_STUDENT_PROFILE||Default value = 0.
Whether Learners and Managers can edit their own information in the Learner portal/dashboard. When you set the parameter to “0”, it means Learners and Managers can not edit their own information. When you set the parameter to “1”, it means Learners and Managers can edit their own information.
|ALLOW_OBJECT_DELETION||Default value =1.
This controls whether administrator(s) can delete objects, such as: learners, facilitators, courses, sections, user, or application. When you set the parameter to “0”, it means the administrator can not delete these objects.
|ALLOW_ROW_CLICK||Default value = 1.
Determines whether users can select a row by clicking anywhere in that row, instead of having to click on the column with the link.
|API_TOKEN||This is the token that is used to validate any requests to the API, used by third-party systems to integrate with Genius.|
|API_URL||URL where the Genius API is located. This typically should not be changed. Note: Genius like the whole path in the parameter, for example https://name.geniussis.com/API.asmx/|
|ASSET_MANAGER_USER_ID||Default value = 1.
Whenever there are no available assets of a particular type, Genius will automatically create a task for this user alerting them that the inventory needs to be replenished.
|AUTO_ASSIGN_ON_CAP_REACHED||Default value = 1. Determines whether Genius should enroll learners in a section even after it has reached its cap.|
|AUTO_CREATE_SECTIONS||Default value = 0.
Whenever Genius does not find a section with available seats, it has two options: either it creates a new section, or it adds the learner to the waiting list. When you set the parameter to “1”, it means you want Genius to create a new section automatically, if all existing sections have reached their caps. When you set the parameter to “0”, it means you want Genius to add the learner to the waiting list.
|AUTO_SUGGEST_SECTION_NAME||Default value = 1 (We now recommend this value be set to 0 by default).
Determines whether Genius should automatically suggest the section name based on the selected course name and the number of existing sections of that course (course name + sec. #) in the selected term. When you set the parameter to “1”, it means Genius will suggest a section name. When you set the parameter to “0”, it means Genius will not suggest a section name.
|CLIENT_STRING||Used for the integration between Genius and certain LMS.|
|COACH_ROLES||Default value = COACH.
Determines the user role(s) that should appear under the Coaches tab. You can add multiple user roles separated by a comma.
|COMMUNICATION_DISPLAY_LENGTH||Default value = 64.
Defines how many characters of a communication entry should be displayed in the summary screen.
|DAYS_TO_KEEP_REPORT||Default value = 15.
After this number of days, reports requested by user(s) will be deleted. The parameter is used by the offline report task.
|DEFAULT_AFFILIATION_ID||Default value = -1.
When creating a new section, what default affiliation ID should it be associated with. Parameter value should = the affiliation ID. A parameter value of -1 pulls up the select option on the drop down menu.
|DEFAULT_ATTENDANCE_TYPE||Default value = "Unexcused Absence" (We now recommend you set this value to Present, since more people will be present than absent).
When you go to enter the attendance, you select a section and then a date, and Genius shows a list of all students enrolled in that section so you can mark their attendance. This parameter defines if by default they are automatically marked as Present (so you just need to change the ones that are not there) or Absent (so you just need to change the ones that are there).
|DEFAULT_BILL_SET||Default value = 1.
When creating a new learner or affiliation, what Bill Set ID to use by deafult.
|DEFAULT_BILLING_GROUP_LIST_INDEX||Default value = 1.
The “billing group” controls what pricing should be applied to a particular learner. Two learners could pay two different amounts for the same course. This parameter controls what is the default billing group that should be used when a new student is created.
|DEFAULT_COURSE_LMS_TERM||Default value = 0.
When creating a new course, what should be the default TERM ID the course is associated with.
|DEFAULT_CREDITS||Default value = 0.5.
When creating a new section, what should be the default number of credits earned.
|DEFAULT_DAYS or DEFAULT_WEEKS||Default value = 20.
When creating a new section, what should be the default section duration in days or weeks, if no start and end dates are entered? Days are used in the ProEd version, and Weeks are used in the K-12 version.
|DEFAULT_SCHOOL_ID||Default value = 1.
When creating a new learner, what should be the default SCHOOL ID they should be associated with.
|DEFAULT_SECTION_CAP||Default value = 30.
When creating a new section, what should be the default enrollment cap.

When creating a new facilitator, what is the maximum number of learners a facilitator can have enrolled in all of their active sessions at one time.
|DEFAULT_TEACHER_ID||Default value = 1.
When creating a new section, what should be the default TEACHER ID assigned to that section? Typically, it is the TBD facilitator.
|DO_NOT_SEND_COMPLETION_TO_LMS||Default value = 0.
Used to designate whether you want to make the learner unavailable in the LMS course after they successfully complete the course. A value = 0 tells Genius to make the user unavailable in the LMS course after completion. A value = 1 tells Genius to leave the user as available in the LMS course so they can continue to access materials in the LMS after they completed it.
|ENABLE_RATINGS||Default value = 1.
Determines whether learners can submit ratings for their facilitators and courses through the learner portal. Setting the parameter = 0, means learners can not rate their facilitators or courses.
|ENROLL_ABOVE_CAP||Default value = 1.
When auto-enrolling learners in a course section, it determines whether Genius should be allowed to enroll learners in a course section, when the section or teacher are above cap and there are no other alternatives.
|FIND_FIRST||Default value = 0.
When clicking on a Genius tab, this parameter determines whether the user is taken to the page where they can type a few letters of the learner, facilitator, course, or section name to find a specific object. When the parameter is set to "0", the user is taken directly to a page that list all active learners, facilitators, courses, and sections.
|FTP_LOGIN||Default value = geniussis.
Used in the integration with the LMS whenever FTP needs to be used.
|FTP_PWD||Default value = NA.
Used in the integration with the LMS whenever FTP needs to be used.
