Typically, an organization that has an e-Learning initiative in place also has a Learning Management System that helps serve the teaching and learning content consumed by your learners. The Learning Management System is the application that students use in order to access their course, complete assignments and submit work. Some examples of LMS include Blackboard Learn, Agilix’s BrainHoney, Brightspace D2L, Instructure Canvas and Moodle, amongst others.
In this article, we provide an overview of the information exchange between the LMS and Genius. We also provide complete details of the different levels of integration available between Genius and different commercial and open source Learning Management System. From this article, we will also provide you with links to articles describing how to set up the integration between Genius and your LMS.
The LMS and Genius
The Learning Management System and Genius have a special relationship, and will typically integrate closely to ensure that you get the most out of your instance of our solution. The integration between Genius and your LMS will be bidirectional. This means that Genius will send information to the LMS, and the LMS will also send information back to the LMS as learners begin to engage with their coursework.
The integration between Genius and the LMS is designed to help you reduce duplication. For example, if you create a course in Genius, Genius will make use of the integration between the LMS and our solution to create that course in the LMS as well. As users complete their coursework, the LMS will report back to Genius with information about your learner's progress and performance.
In this way, Genius becomes a focal point that gathers all the information related to your teaching and learning initiative - and saves duplication and data entry work that can become challenges as your learning initiative begins to scale.
We provide a brief overview of the information exchanged in the integration between Genius and the LMS below:
What Genius sends to the LMS
As an Administrator, you will make use of Genius to create, edit and remove courses, sections, users and enrollments. This information is typically fed back to the LMS, allowing you to manage your teaching and learning initiative from a central location.
In general, information sent from Genius SIS to the LMS may include:
Typically Genius and your LMS will also have an authentication integration. This makes it possible for learners to sign into Genius, and then make use of your Learner's Dashboard to access their coursework without having to provide their login information again. This process is known as Single Sign-On. In some organizations, either the LMS or Genius will be integrated with the Active Directory, CAS or Shibboleth SSO server at your organization. Typically, only one of the two (the LMS or Genius) needs to be integrated with the authentication provider at your organization.
What the LMS sends back to Genius
Once your learners begin to make progress in their courses in the LMS, they will begin to have both grades and progress information that must be made visible in order to better manage your teaching and learning initiative.
To make this possible, the LMS will send the following information back to Genius:
The scope of the integration between the LMS at your organization and Genius will depend both on the LMS your are using in your teaching and learning initiative, and your organization's own preferences.
