The Genius CE & Enterprise Glossary
Administrator: The person who manages the Genius CE or Enterprise instance at your organization. Administrators typically have the ability to create users, courses, sections, affiliations, and enrollments, amongst others. Typically 1-2 people in your organization have Administrator privileges when it comes to managing your instance of Genius.
Affiliation: In Genius CE & Enterprise, an Affiliation is a way to classify your users through a hierarchical tree-like structure. Affiliations are typically used to represent organizational reporting relationships, but they can also be used to classify your users however you'd prefer.
Certificate: Certificates are documents that evidence the successful completion of a course or learning pathway. To print a certificate in Genius CE & Enterprise, you can click the Completed Courses section of the Learner's Dashboard.
Completion: Once a Learner enrolls in a Course in Genius, the Course can have three statuses - Not Started, In Progress, and Completed. Typically, it is necessary to set up a column in your LMS to flag a course as Completed for this course to report as Completed in Genius.
Course: A Course in Genius is a data structure that is used as a template to group multiple Sections. A Course can be, for example, Introduction to Accounting. You can define certain high-level properties for this course, but to have learners complete Introduction to Accounting, you can create a section of that course.
Dashboards: Dashboards are visualizations of the progress, performance, and engagement information of either a single user or a group of users. For example, the Learner's Dashboard shows graphs and other visual representations of the progress, performance, and engagement of that individual Learner - while the Manager's or Affiliation dashboard shows information about all the learners who are under that user's supervision. The Administrator's Dashboard, on the other hand, shows information about the progress, performance, and engagement across the entire learning initiative. Dashboards can be edited by Administrators or by the users themselves if required.
Genius CE & Enterprise: These are the terms used to refer to our Enterprise SaaS products. These products are our newest, most up to date softwares that features new releases to improve the products on a frequent basis.
Instructor: An Instructor is a user responsible for the management of a course. Courses typically have an instructor, but this does not mean that the instructor teaches the course material. In online-only learning opportunities, Instructors will typically not teach the material but will be the first "point of contact" when learners face issues associated with the learning initiative.
Learner: Learners are the people who register for and complete their courses in Genius. A close equivalent would be "student", but in most cases, learners are typically completing training or professional development courses in Genius.
Learning Path: A Learning Path in Genius CE & Enterprise is a collection of courses that are grouped together as a 'program' or curriculum. When a learner completes a Learning Path, this can lead to the issuance of a certificate of completion. Learning Paths are comprised of courses, and courses in a Learning Path can be made mandatory or optional - or Genius CE & Enterprise can be used to enforce the completion of those courses in a particular order, for example.
Ledger: The Ledger is where Genius CE & Enterprise keep track of the finances around your learning initiative. As you know, Genius CE & Enterprise allow you to charge for your courses - turning your learning initiative into a source of income for your organization. The Ledger is where Genius CE & Enterprise keep record of the debits and credits that go towards your learning initiative - and also notes how each course was paid for.
Manager: Affiliations make it possible for you to replicate your organizational hierarchy in Genius CE & Enterprise. Once you have a created an Affiliations structure, you can 'promote' a user in your learning initiative to be a Manager. Managers in Genius CE & Enterprise have visibility into the progress, performance, and engagement of all the learners that are classified in the same Affiliation as they are. They also have a different user interface which is much closer to the one used by Administrators. An Affiliation can have multiple Managers, allowing you to delegate some of the tasks you have as an Administrator to other users within your learning initiative.
Report: Reports in Genius CE & Enterprise are structured, filtered data that is pulled out from the database to provide your stakeholders with information to power decision making. Genius CE & Enterprise include over 50+ built-in reports and also provides you with the ability to filter those reports or to create your own if required.
Section: A section in Genius CE & Enterprise is an instance of a course. As we describe in the Terms, Courses, and Sections article in this Knowledge Base, Courses are an 'abstract' data structure, while Sections are instances of courses that your learners enroll in and complete. Typically, Sections are also associated with a term - so you can create multiple instances of the same course in a calendar year or even multiple instances of the same course that run in parallel to each other.
Status: A user's status is set in Genius CE & Enterprise as ACTIVE or ARCHIVED. An active user can log into Genius CE or Enterprise and use the site as designed. An archived user's account is put on hold and can only be accessed again by the user when an Administrator activates them again.
Transcript: A Transcript is simply a record of all the courses that a Learner has completed in your organization's learning initiative. Transcripts in Genius CE & Enterprise contain a listing of all the courses your learners have completed, as well as a summary of the grades they have achieved in each course. A Learner can issue his or her Transcripts by clicking on the name of a completed course in the Completed Courses section of the Learner's Dashboard.
