There are two types of pacing: Implicit and Explicit.
Implicit Pacing:
Implicit is the default pacing in Genius. If someone is enrolled in a course for 20 weeks, and there are 60 assignments in the course, they need to complete 3 assignments per week. Implicit pacing divides the total number of assignments by the number of weeks to get the pacing for each week. That is the implicit pacing that Genius calculates by default, and students/parents can see this information in the Pacing page.
As an example, for rolling enrollments, two students in the same section may have started on different dates, it would be difficult for a teacher to manage how many assignments each student should have completed at any particular time. By dividing the number of assignments by the number of weeks for the course, the pacing will show correctly for each student even if they were enrolled two weeks later.
Explicit Pacing:
The explicit pacing works when the teacher (or any other authorized user) explicitly specifies a specific pacing per week. As an example, a teacher could specify that someone who is taking a course for 20 weeks should complete 1 assignment the first week, 3 assignments the second week, 2 assignments the third week and so on... for the length of the course.
Note: The teacher doesn’t need to specify what assignments should be completed, but rather how many assignments should be completed each week. This is done at the course level, by selecting a course, going to the "Master Pacing" page and then selecting a pace.
Implicit pacing is the default configuration and is automatically designed to track pacing by dividing the total number of assignments by the number of weeks set for the course. (60 assignments / 20 weeks) is an expected pacing of 3 assignments due per week. Below are various images that would depict pacing for the courses.
Below are examples of Implicit pacing images from the student dashboard. The student can see Actual assignments completed versus Expected assignments to be completed based on the overall length of the course. You can see the students pacing for courses in the Student’s Tab ->Pacing, under the Enrollments block in the left navigation menu.
The explicit pacing works when the teacher (or any other authorized user) explicitly specifies a specific pacing per week.
The first step in setting up explicit pacing is to define the pacing at the course level under master pacing. Click on the Courses tab and then Master Pacing located under the Sections and Pacing block in the left navigation menu.
This is where you will setup your explicit pacing. If you have an existing pacing setup you can choose it from the dropdown list or click “Add new pace” to create your master pacing.
Once you have selected or created your master pacing number of weeks, you can enter the expected number of assignments for the student to complete each week.
Note: The teacher doesn’t need to specify what assignments should be completed, but rather how many assignments should be completed each week. In the example below you will notice the assignments due per week can vary.
